As I write this blog, my 20-year-old son sits in the next room, phone-shopping the best price on an EKG. He needs the test to prepare for his third kidney transplant, but he is about to reach his lifetime insurance cap, so it's important to be as economical as possible. This aspect of living with kidney failure is still new to him, despite the fact that he was born with kidney disease.
Over the years, when my son's trials were the hardest, I found myself asking the questions perhaps every Christian asks at one time or another:
Where is God in all this?
Why doesn't he take away this pain?
What role does faith play in this trial?
Does enduring patiently mean suffering will last a whole lifetime?
Even as I struggled with these and similar questions, I saw people with greater and more prolonged suffering, and even some whose troubles seemed minor by comparison, wrestle to understand these perplexities.
From my experience and my faith, I have come to some answers that I hope can help others. No doubt I'll continue to learn, and as I do, I'll share a little more.
